Get Naked with GOD

How about Getting Naked with God?

Stop freaking out, yes I said God. No I’m not seducing you into conversion therapy, and I’m not one of those creepy guys who wants to give you a spiritual prostate massage. You can refer to the consciousness at the centre of creation any way you like, call it Spirit, the Universe, Hashem .… whatever. I like to use the word God because I think it’s time that the sane people on this planet take back the word, and own it. We did it with queer, and faggot. Why let  ignorant, right-wing morons,  and religious fanatics of all stripes, claim ownership of higher consciousness.

***

God not only made you, but made you naked. Don’t let your discomfort with religious people, or your own self-hate stop you from delving into the deeper dimensions of life, and really understanding yourself.

***

As you get truly naked you can’t help but be drawn to the deeper dimensions of life whether that be through personal growth, or a more spiritual approach. As you dive in you’ll realize that you are a unique piece in an intricate puzzle that you have never been separate from. You will become more balanced, and more confident. You owe it to yourself to explore everything that you are, even the things that are ugly, or painful. You have every right to develop and grow. Ultimately it is your job to get out into the world and shine so that all of us can benefit from your unique gifts . The challenges you face along the way are important too. I have no idea where I might be without mine.  So stop letting your fear, shame, and preconceived notions, prevent you from getting everything you can out of life.

Maybe you’re someone who isn’t religious or spiritual in any way. It’s very possible that you see God as the enemy. After all the atrocities that have been committed against us in the name of one god, or another, who can blame you. Perhaps you think that the only options you have are religious and that there is no other way to explore the possibility that there might be a greater consciousness that kicked off creation.  I agree with all of that too. A vision of Spirit that sees God as a patriarch watching down from some heaven in the sky and judging your every action and thought seems ridiculous to me. So, don’t worry, that’s not what I’m talking about.

Some of you have serious conflicts with the vision of God that you were brought up with. You were raised in a faith community that will reject you wholesale because of your orientation, or perhaps even your interest in something that they consider forbidden. I know where you’re coming from. I was deeply religious as a child. I was raised in a Catholic family. I was an altar boy, I was in choir, I actually wanted to be a priest.

***

When I first realized that I was gay, and what that meant to the Church, I took a step back and thought about what was going on. Forget getting into a debate over genetics, or whether something is a choice or not. All that is frankly irrelevant to your personal journey. It took me a while but eventually I realized that experience was telling me, regardless of what God might be, that all I had ever felt was complete acceptance. God was, and is, perfectly fine with me the way I am.

***

The real turning point for me was when my very religious father announced that he did not believe I was going to hell just because the church said so. That sealed the deal for me. It was clear that the church is wrong.

There is no belief system that holds a monopoly on Spirit. That thinking has led to nothing but grief four our entire species. You have choices. Your connection to God does not have to be severed because you no longer believe in the teachings you were brought up with. Explore your options, you may even find a place very much like your original community that can accept you just the way you are.

***

It could be that you’ve already made peace with the idea that there may be something more to life that what we see with our eyes. You’re ready to explore but may not be sure where to start. There are an awful lot of ideas about spirituality, and personal development, out there. It might take you a while to find out which one is a good fit for you.

***

I have a client who I worked with for a number of years. We’ve become good friends.  He fell pretty much into the first category when we met. He was suspicious of anything that seemed religious. His experience with energy healing helped him see that perhaps things were not as simple as he assumed. We worked together to feed his intellectual curiosity. He read about, and explored a number of systems, including Ifa which is the philosophy I practice. He’s still exploring and has started meditation practice, and delving more deeply into the heart of his being. He’s receiving all of the benefits that regular spiritual practice provides while he continues searching for the right fit. For some of us that fit comes in the form of a spiritual community. That’s something that’s important to me. For others personal practice is all they need to feel like they’re progressing as human beings.

***

No matter where you are it is possible for you to find a deeper connection to yourself, and through that depth, a connection to something bigger. To me it simply feels like a vast consciousness that permeates everything that is. I believe at our deepest levels we are all inseparable from that source. That connection to this true centre brings us closer to other people and everything else. Any philosophy that insists on its own supremacy can only be destructive.
